There are a variety of communication methods used with and by Deaf and Hard of Hearing people, and different schools of thought regarding various approaches of communication.

Native Sign Languages

For example:

  • Auslan|Australian Sign Language (Auslan)
  • ASL|American Sign Language (ASL)
  • BSL|British Sign Language (BSL)
  • LSQ|Linguistics Sign Quebec (LSQ)
  • JSL|Japanese Sign Language (JSL) and so on.


Manual Codes for spoken languages?, such as:

Signed Exact English?
Signed English/Australasian Signed English?


Cued Speech – a phonetic cued system showing all the vowels and consonants of the spoken language in a visual one handed cued shapes


Oral Methods? which rely on auditory training, such as:

Auditory-Verbal Method?
Lipreading,also? known as Speech Reading
Speaking using voice


Total Communication?


Bi-lingualism? - the use of a native sign language, such as Auslan with written English schools such as Toowong State School, Brisbane, Australia (http://www.toowongss.eq.edu.au) and the Robert Reid Centre, Sydney use the bi-lingual program
